As Yasmine said, this year, we celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Harry Potter. Before I tell you more, let me remind you of its story. Harry Potter, it’s the story of a young orphan who learns for his eleventh birthday that he is a wizard. After his discovery, he is immersed in a world made of magic and fantastic creatures. He also learns a terrible secret : his parents were murdered a few years earlier by a powerful wizard called Voldemort.
Since the publication of the first volume called « Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone », it’s a real phenomenon ! Numbers are impressive, let’s take a look. Seven volumes have been published between nineteen-ninety-seven and two thousand and seven, each of which tells a year at Hogwarts school. Since the first publication, four hundred and fifty million copies have been sold all over the world. Books have been translated into more than seventy-nine languages in two hundred countries. This success quickly inspired the cinema, eight films were produced. Many derivatives products inspired by the history have been created as well as a play called « Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ». All these numbers made the Harry Potter phenomenon one of the biggest commercial successes of literature.
However, Harry Potter could never have known the success we have today. Indeed, the british author J. K. Rowling received a dozen refusals before the first publication by Bloomsbury. There is no doubt that publishers who refused the publication must regret their decision today.
For the twentieth anniversary, J. K. Rowling took the opportunity to thank everyone on Twitter. But that’s not all ! Indeed, a surprise will delight fans of the saga. It’s of course the opening of an exhibition dedicated to Harry Potter. This exhibition takes place at the British Library, in London. It started since the twentieth of October and is called « Harry Potter, a History of Magic ». I’m sure you want to know more about that, so, let’s have a look !
As you may have seen, you will discover a library in the library, magical, and secret. There will also be quiz nights, and you will even have the possibility to chat with Hermione herself ! Then, see you before the twenty-eighth of February two thousand and eighteen. It will cost between five and sixteen pounds. Notice that you will find this exhibition in New-York in October two thousand and eighteen.
If you can’t go to the British Library, don’t be disappointed, they thought of everything to satisfy you. Indeed, two exclusive books were published with the opening of the exhibition.
The first book is the official book of the exhibition. You will be completely immersed in it, and you will discover the subjects taught at Hogwarts school, you will also find manuscripts and exclusive illustrations.
The second book entitled « Harry Potter : a journey through a History of Magic » presents you an irresistible journey in the History of Magic. It reveals stories about creatures, from mermaids to unicorns, and is scattered by unpublished sketches drawn by J. K. Rowling.
