Banksy is a world-famous British street artist whose real identity remains unknown. He might have been born in Bristol, England, around 1974 and his real name could be Robert Banks or Robert Cunninghm, but these remain hypotheses.
His graffiti artist career began in the 1990s when he was part of a graffiti gang, called DryBreadZ crew.
Most of Banksy’s artwork is composed of striking stencilled images with a slogan. His favourite topics often cover political themes, denunciation of war, capitalism or hypocrisy and he regularly uses humour or cynicism to convey his messages. His works often represent animals like rats or apes and people such as children, the royal family, or figures of authority like policemen or soldiers. He is also famous for his parodies of masterpieces or well-known photos.
In 2018, one of his artwork entitled "Girl with Balloon" was sold at auction for £1 million before it self-destructed thanks to a hidden shredder. The work of art now renamed "Love is in the bin" was later sold at auction for £18.5 million in 2021 showing how popular the artist is.
