Not too fast, please!
Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America. With African, Indian, Portuguese, and even Chinese influences, it’s a melting pot of different cultures and food.
If you go to Guyana, you must try the chicken curry with roti. It’s absolutely delicious! Thanks to all the spices, it’s really flavourful but it's not too hot. Roti is a round flat bread that looks like a tortilla and originally comes from Asia. You should use it to soak up the sauce. Yummy!
You can also try Metemgee, it’s another traditional dish. This time, it’s a vegetarian soup made with starches such as sweet potato, cassava and plantain and cooked in coconut milk. It’s really good!
If you are lucky, you can try Guyanese Pepperpot. That’s usually reserved for Christmas and other special holidays because it takes hours to cook. It’s a stew made with different types of meat, like beef and pork or mutton and a tasty brown sauce made with cassava, cinnamon, pepper and various spices. It's really flavourful!
You should also try the local Chow Mein, adapted from the Chinese version. This typical dish is basically a mix of noodles, vegetables, meats, and a wonderful thick sauce made with oyster sauce, soy sauce and some cassava. You must try this!
There are many other typical dishes that you should try, so you should go and visit Guyana and then, tell me what your favourite Guyanese food is!
