In many countries, bookmaking is illegal – but it is legal in the United Kingdom. There is a large market in the UK for gambling at betting shops – or bookmakers’ – or on various websites.
There are about 8,500 betting shops and it is estimated that about 2.1 million Britons gamble online; the online sports betting market is estimated to be worth £650 million.
The British will bet on anything: the probability that man will land on Mars, or that it will snow on Christmas Day, or the outcome of political elections, or the winner of reality television contests.
Betting shops are everywhere. You can place a bet on Manchester United as easily as you can buy bread. Bets are also taken via the Internet or phones, with SMS.
Most of the bets at betting shops or online are on sporting events. The English are passionate about football – this is what attracts the majority of betting interest; but they also bet on horse racing, cricket, rugby, tennis, golf, etc.
Thanks a lot!
