Among the mega-rich of this world, there’s a new generation of businessmen ready to devote their time and money to deal with the planet’s problems.
What drives them to attempt new approaches to crucial issues that have been the domain of nation states so far? Can these capitalists, tycoons, industrial titans really save our planet? And if so, should we leave it up to them?
In 2006 at a New-York press conference, the third wealthiest person in the world stood on stage and did something extraordinary. Warren Buffet, chairman and chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway announced he was giving away 99 per cent of his fortune to philanthropic causes. At an estimated 37 billion dollars it was the largest donation ever given. Most of the money would go to a foundation run by another rich
man, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. Warren Buffet told the press: "When you’ve got billions of people who face appalling living-conditions, starvation, lack of hygiene, poverty... well, 3 billion dollars a year is not too much money for me to give if that can improve education or cure diseases.”
