Edward was the King of England. He died in 1066.
Harold Godwinson was chosen as successor, but William of Normandy declared the throne was promised to him. Duke William decided to attack England, he ordered the building of ships.
Men pulled the ships to the sea and carried weapons and supplies onto the ships.
William sailed across the Channel in a lot of small boats. The Duke of Normandy launched his invasion. His soldiers and horses hurried to Hastings.
The Normans prepared to fight against King Harold. William attacked with his cavalry and archers.
The French army fought the English at the battle of Hastings on October 14th, 1066.
Harold's soldiers resisted very bravely But the Anglo-Saxon King Harold died in the battle,killed by an arrow in his eye. The Normans charged with their cavalry and won the Battle of Hastings. The Duke of Normandy became William the Conqueror, King of England.
