But,the first variant sounds more natural,when you use only nationality without the word people.(if you feel like using this sentence in your speech))))
I actually made this sentence to practice the plural form of имя, so your sentences both work perfectly. =) It's interesting that У takes the genitive case - I figured it took prepositional! I think in the future I'll put my reason for making the sentence in the notes.
Haha...I didn't catch that in the recording! I think for the time being I'm going to forget about имена, since I can't seem to create a sentence with plural nominative. I can always come back to it later.
One of the examples might be:Эти имена звучат одинаково (These names sound the same).As Ben and Бен in English and in Russian.Имена here is in nominative case))

I assume,here you wanted to practise Accusative for люди.So,we have У Американских Кого?Чего? людей есть три имени.And людях is a Prepositional case,for example:Этот фильм О ком?О чем? об Американских людях(This film is about American people).
