Normal pace (B1+ level)

Last night, my husband asked me to prepare curried mutton for supper. It wasn’t really his favourite but he often had a special wish about food. I laid the table for supper and put a plate for the stable boy on the gas fire in the kitchen to keep it warm. Then, we had supper: my husband and me and the two other grooms. Edith, the maid, ate hastily, because she was to bring Ned’s supper to the stable. I went to bed at around 11. I didn’t sleep well because it was raining heavily and my husband was somehow restless. He said he couldn’t sleep and wanted to check the horses. It always happens at the time of the races. He doesn’t want anything to happen to the Colonel’s horses, especially to Silver Blaze. Then, he put on his clothes and raincoat and left the house. And he took with him a knife that had been lying on the dressing table. I don’t know why he took the knife. He may have feared he might be attacked. I don’t know any close acquaintances that could be suspected. He only mentioned a Mr. Derbyshire, living in London, from time to time. But that must have been a friend of his. I never met him.
