On Wednesday, October 9, 2020, 15-year-old Colin Renaud decided to wear a skirt to his school located in Montreal, Canada.
Colin was inspired by a growing movement to protest against sexism and discrimination against women.
Colin said that the movement had two objectives: one was to fight against the hypersexualization of women’s bodies and allow women to wear what they want; the other was to break the codes of our society and stop saying there’s a gender for everything (this is for boys and this is for girls).
Renaud didn’t think his skirt would be a problem because his school has had a mixed uniform policy since 2015: all students are allowed to wear skirts or pants, as they choose. But when he arrived at school, Colin was reprimanded by a monitor — who asked him if he was transgender or gay — and brought to the principal’s office, where a secretary told him skirts are for girls.
Fortunately, things changed when the school’s assistant director became aware of the situation. She saluted Renaud’s initiative.
Renaud was allowed to return to class and to wear his skirt for the rest of the day, and the monitor apologized.
Thank you so much, Jean!
