1) I can't open the door, I've lost my key.
2) I wasn't able to open the door to my apartment since I'd lost my key.
3) - Do you know how Andrey is doing?
- No, I don't. Truth be told, I haven't seen him in so long
4) - Why didn't you tell her how Andrey was doing?
- I didn't tell her anything about him because I hadn't seen him in a long time.
5) I've been waiting for her call since I sent her an SMS. She hasn't phoned yet. I'll phone her now.
6) I'd been waiting for her call since I'd sent her a SMS. She hadn't phoned, so I decided to phone her. Here "since" can mean "from the time that I sent her the SMS" -or- "because I'd sent her an SMS." With the first meaning - use I sent... With the 2nd meaning: I'd sent.
7) I've known her since 2000. I didn't even suspect that she was a widow. She'd lost her husband 2 years before we met.
8) - May I use your computer to go online?
- Sorry, the data port is broken. [or: the data port broke]
9) - Hello, could I speak to Maria Nikolaevna?
- I'm sorry. It looks like she has gone out.
Notes
Few people would ever say SMS, it is hard to sya and ruins the flow of the sentence. 'text' or 'message' is more likely.
I would never say "the data port broke" The first one is more likely.
