Note: This is vernacular. While grammatically correct, it is considered more polite to say, "Would you please..." instead of "Can you..."

Thanks very much for your comment. It's not the first time I'm being told the language we can find in books of English is not what is actually used.

Unfortunately, it IS the English that is being used. However, every once in a while, you will encounter someone who understands the difference and may say, "Yes, I CAN open the window," and then not DO anything because the question you are asking technically is: Is the person physically able to open a window?

S/He may go on to ask you, "If you are REQUESTING if I WILL open the window, then, yes, I shall, at your request." So, that "will" or conditional "would" is an appropriately phrased request to another person extending a favor.
