Ireland in an island country situated in the North West of Europe.
It has been a member of the European Union since 1973.
It is divided between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, in the northeast of the island.
The population of the Republic of Ireland is over 4.5 million. The Capital city is Dublin, on the East coast of Ireland. Its currency is the Euro. It replaced the Irish Pound in 2002.
The population of Northern Ireland is over 1.8 million. The Capital City is Belfast.
The country is divided into 4 provinces : Ulster, Connacht, Leinster and Munster. These provinces are divided into 32 counties. Six of Ulster’s counties are in Northern Ireland and the other 26 counties are part of the Republic of Ireland.
The Head of State is President Michael D. Higgins who represents the country at home and abroad. The Prime Minister is Enda Kenny.
The national flag is the tricolour of green, white and orange. Green is the symbol of the Roman Catholics. Orange represents the Protestants and white symbolizes the aspiration for peace between the Roman Catholic majority and the Protestant minority.
The official emblem of Ireland is the harp. Ireland is the only country in the world which uses a musical instrument as a national emblem.
The shamrock is another recognized symbol of Ireland. The national Airline Aer Lingus uses it as its emblem.
Saint Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland. They celebrate him on the 17th of March each year. He is said to have used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish Pagans in the 5th century.
Ireland has two official languages : English which is spoken everywhere and Irish which is spoken as a first language by a small minority of Irish people mainly in the North West and South West of Ireland. Irish however is taught both in all Primary and Secondary schools.
Roman castles and monastic ruins can be seen in many provinces of the country. Ireland has a tradition in music and dancing known thanks to Riverdance and Lord of the dance.
