Please note: It should be "The traffic was a mess."

In casual conversation "the" is optional. In California you'll probably hear "traffic's a mess" more often than not. Or a favorite profanity followed by the word traffic.

Fair enough, here in the UK you need to say "the traffic" or it sounds like an incomplete sentence.
