A long time ago in America, a young boy, called Ben, watched the storm from his bedroom window. He listened to the wind and saw the heavy rain running down his bedroom window. He was excited by the loud thunder and bright lightning.
Ben had always been interested in thunderstorm. When he went to university, he studied science. He was quite sure that there was a link between lightning and electricity. He wanted to find out, so he tried something.
He waited for a storm and then tied a metal key on the end of a piece of silk rope and sent it high into the sky using a kite. Ben wanted to see if the lightning would strike the metal key.
Everyone thought Ben was crazy because it was a very dangerous thing to do. But it worked! The lightning struck the key and Ben Knew there was a link between electricity and lightning.
