Graffiti comes from the Italian word "Graffere" which means to scratch on a surface.
Graffiti can be simple scratch marks to writings or large wall murals with paint.It has always existed .
In prehistoric times, people already painted pictures of animals or battles in caves.
Later , the Romans and Greeks wrote their names and protest poems on buildings.
Modern graffiti appeared in the late 60s in New York. It was linked to the Hip Hop culture which started in the US in the late 60s and early 70s.
In the early days , the taggers were part of street gangs who mainly wanted to mark their territory.
Graffiti artists chose"names" or "tags" that were short , easy and could be written quickly. To do so, they use spray paint , stencils , stickers , wheat paste and even charcoal.
The more places you tagged , the more people saw your name, the more famous you became.
During the 1980s , Art galleries in New York began buying graffiti , some people have seen the artistic value in some graffiti and the power it could represent in political issues, for example, the Berlin Wall was covered by graffiti reflecting the social pressure against the oppressive Soviet rule.
While that street art began to be regarded as an art form , the government started to crackdown on illegal tagging, the mayor of New York, for example, declared the first war on graffiti.
The movement had made the streets more dangerous and graffiti was seen as a nuisance.
Today, graffiti is becoming a more accepted form of art and is better respected .
