Natural Speed Please! Thank you!
If you live in Japan, you might have already noticed that Japanese people really love making a toast.
We loudly exclaim, "kan-pai!", in Japanese.
I'm sure that people in other countries make a toast on some occasions, but perhaps not as often as the Japanese.
I often see even small group of people happily make a toast when they commence eating and drinking in Japan. I assume that it has some profound meanings, which I should explore some day.
Speaking of drinking, I met a Japanese girl at a party last year, who had been living in NY for four years. What surprised me was that she drank beer straight from the bottle! It was not just me who was surprised at this.
This is considered an outrageous act in Japan.
Now I know that people in NY drink beer in that way she did, as I've seen it in the movies.
We pour beer into glasses for each other. The women who are quick to notice that someone's glass is almost empty are considered especially attentive. They approach the person with the empty glass, and pour them some more beer. Sadly, I'm not that type of woman. (^^)
I prefer to let people decide for themselves whether they want more or not. However, it has become a custom in Japan, and I should try to be a nice woman at Japanese-style parties. (^^)
