Note to recorder:

Not too fast please, it is for low intermediate students.

Ned Kelly was a criminal who killed policement and who robbed banks. However, in Australia, most people see him as a hero.
Ned Kelly is considered by many Australians as a incredibly brave man and a national hero who stood up against unfair British rule. He was considered as the defender of the poor and the oppressed. Because of that, some people refer to him as "the Australian Robin Hood. "

Ned Kelly did commit some crimes and he admitted to some of them, but some people claim that he was in fact persecuted by the police because he was poor and of Irish origins. Some of his supporters go as far as saying that he was wrongly accused of some of the crimes he is said to have committed.

As a consequence, he is often described as a rebel with a cause, a figure of rebellion against injustice and oppression. Ned Kelly was so popular that after his arrest, more than 30,000 people signed a petition to spare his life. To this day, if an Australian tells you that you are « as game as Ned Kelly », it is probably one of the best compliment you can get !
