The dark side of the Industrial Revolution.
The Industrial Revolution is a time period, approximately from 1780 to 1850, during which the technology improved a lot. It was great for many things like creating new machines using steam technology, creating the first factories, making people and countries richer… But it was not only good.
As a matter of facts, people in the countryside couldn’t make as much money as before and many had to move to the city. But their dream of becoming rich men, “bourgeois,” was not always to become true. Workers didn’t have protection like we have today and many had to work in very difficult conditions, making dangerous jobs nobody else wanted, for a very low salary. Also, some of them didn’t have resting days and worked much more than 60 hours a week!
Also, if a family was very poor and really in need of money, they could make their children work. It was very common at that time to see kids in factories or doing small jobs like selling newspaper or cleaning chimneys. There was no age limitation so, sometimes, 10 years old kids could go to work, just to help their family to eat every day.
Those difficult living conditions for the poorest families very often implied illnesses. The kids became very sick because of the pollution, the dirtiness of the cities, the lack of food and the bad pharmaceutical technology of the time period. It was common during this era that children died really young.
So even though the industrial revolution brought a lot of things that helped us build the world of today, it is clear that it has a darker side. Interestingly enough, it is this aspect that writers or movie makers love to use for their creation, such as Oliver Twist or Sweeney Todd.
