The old sentence was supposed to be: "Put the book under the chair. After that the book is under the chair." was it really wrong?
In this case it' better to say "The book is lying under the table -Книга лежит под стулом- rather than "The book is under the table - -Книга под стулом."Because after you put smth somewhere it's lying there.And here I'd rather say 'now -теперь',But not after that.'Теперь книга лежит под стулом'.In what tense you'd like to have this sentence recorded?'Я положил книгу -past or Я кладу книгу - present?
We should not make a too big sience out of it. I need just a sentence to learn the word: После.
After I am at 2500 words, I will learn more grammar and read many books.
(^^ This might translate into a sentence with После)

Are the putting it under the chair and lying under the chair in the same tense?
In the German language we have a tense after the past, which could be used here in the first part of the sentence.
Я положил книгу под стул, после этого она лежала под стулом.
I see a reason to change that sentence and make it correct, as you said.

In that case, I'd need a new one with the word после.
