I would like a natural speed please, I'm training for my exams.
I am going to talk about the notion “Idea of progress”. To begin , I would like to give a definition of this notion. A progress is an evolution in order to make things improve positively. However, progress can also presents terrible consequences and even if its purpose was to solve problems, it can create others sometimes more serious.
That is why we may wonder if progress is always a progress. My speech will fall into two parts. It would be very interesting to weigh the pros and the cons of technological progress.
I- PROS
On the one hand, let’s study robotics that can be considered as a great progress for humanity.
In robotics I include all forms of non-human or animal intelligence known as Artificial Intelligence.
Indeed, according to the advanced technology in the AI’s, it liberates us from difficult tasks as in industry or the housework. In addition, robots are today much more productive than men, they can see and solve issues . They are faster and can work almost 24h a day, with almost unlimited energy.
In a video, we had the example of a fast levitating train : the hyperloop one by the company Hyperloop. With his 28 feet of length and his acceleration 192 miles per hour, its really a speedster which work with a full electric system and run into a tube and travel around the network of stations.
It is the proof of the concept cars, the future mean of transportation as well as driverless cars.
II-CONS
On the other hand, the novel “O brave new world” by Aldous Huxley is about the uniformity of the human race.
Its in 26th century and there is not war, conflict or poverty. There is a World Controller which control the births by raising the humans from their grow in a hatchery to their hole life. Humans aren’t born, they grow and the names parents are banned terms.
15,000 clones grow from each embryo. They mature quickly to the age 20 and nothing change until their death, fixed at 50.
There are like robots, anything that’s about culture is forbidden. All humans are the same without dreams, without plans, nothing to do at all because thinking is not allowed.
It is a dystopia : the complete opposite of an utopia.
And in our world through all the different scenes about the end of it, a lot of people thought and still think the possibility of the war between machins and humans. Obviously in that scene, the humans failed to keep the control ; if the control isn’t already lost , for the people addicted to technology.
To conclude, the progress isn’t always progress for it can be either helpful and harmful. I mean, it depends of the mobiles of the people which are involved and the way they use the progress. Ai’s technology is awesome but it can be used to make hacking easier and steal informations.
Progress can either drive people mad and allow a better perception of the humankind.
