Sometimes, when you're working really hard, you can't help thinking, "If I'd just been born with more talent, I wouldn't have to work hard." Professor Michael Howe and his colleagues examined outstanding performances in many areas and couldn't find anyone who reached the highest levels of achievement without thousnds of hours of work and practice, whether in music, mathematics, chess, or sports. I'm not saying Shakespeares, Picassos, Einsteins, and Edisons of the world don't have some talent for what they do, but the key is that they work harder and longer than other people. Look at child prodigy, Mozart. Everybody said the kid had talent, but he still had to work 12 hours a day for masterpiece. Michelangelo, who produced some of the world's great art, said, "If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn't seem so wonderful."
