The other day, I went to a neighborhood secondhand bookstore.
I like shopping in secondhand bookstores.
There were not many foreign books in the store.
While Japanese books were neatly arranged on the bookshelves, foreign books were piled in a heap on the top of one of the shelves in the corner of the store.
I borrowed a stepladder from the clerk and hunted for foreign books.
After a brief hunt, I came across two books which interested me.
One was “The Hound of the Baskervilles” written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the other was a collection of short stories by Edgar Allan Poe.
They both seemed quite old, and actually they were dusty and had grown yellow.
I took them to the counter to ask about the prices because they were not shown.
“How much are they?” I asked.
“Well…, hrmm…, just a moment. Mmm…, I…I don’t know. Please pay 100 yen. That’s all right.” the clerk said.
“Only 100 yen? In total?”
“Yes, in total.”
“Wow! That’s cheap! ”
I bought them both.
By the way, Poe is very difficult to read…
Yes, Poe is difficult to read! I remember in my 11th grade English class, my classmates and I were still having trouble reading Poe's work! It is very stylistic, so if you can understand any of it, I'd say that your English is very good!
