He was born in April 1889 and he died in December 1977. He was from a very poor family. He began his career performing as a child (music hall, comedian). In 1908 he moved to America. There, he developed the Tramp persona and became very popular. During the 1940s: he was forced to leave the USA, because of suspicions of
Communist sympathies. He finally settled in Switzerland. He is one of the most important figures of the film industry, especially in the silent era. He wrote, directed, produced, starred in and composed the music for most of his films. His major works are The Kid and Modern Times.
