"日本刀は、日本固有の方法で鍛えた刀で、その優れた切れ味と美しさによって海外にも早くから知られていました。片刃で反りがあるのが特徴です。柄の根元には、敵の刀を受け止めたり、柄を握る手を守ったりするため、つばという金具を入れます。 刀は武士の魂といわれ、江戸時代（1603～1867）には武家社会の象徴ともされていました。明治時代（1868～1912）に入ると武士は廃業を強いられ、刀も禁止されました。その後は軍隊の将校が地位の象徴として持っていました。戦後はその澄み切った清らかさと美しさから芸術品として鑑賞する以外には、所持することを禁じられています。"
