(Interviewer)-I'm writing an article about teen jobs for my school magazine, do you mind if I interview you?
(Paul)-No, of course not, I don't mind at all. Go ahead.
(Interviewer)-Thanks! So Paul, can you tell me a bit about your job?
(Paul)-Yeah! Well, uh, I'm a paper-boy, so I deliver newspapers from my local news agent shop to houses in my neighborhood.
(Interviewer)-How old are you?
(Paul)-I'm fifteen. Well, nearly sixteen, actually. My birthday is next month.
(Interviewer)-How long have you been a paper boy?
(Paul)-Um, about a year and a half. I was fourteen when I started doing the paper-route.
(Interviewer)-Do you deliver papers everyday?
(Paul)-No. I only do the route on the weekends, my parents don't want me to work on the weekdays, and anyway, I wouldn't have enough time to do the route before going to school. I'd have to get up very early, and then I'd be tired at school. That's probably why my parents won't let me do the weekday route.
(Interviewer)-So, what time do you have to get up at the weekends to do your route?
(Paul)-On Saturdays, I have to be at the news agent's at seven o'clock. So I get up at half-past six, and on Sundays I start a bit later at half-past seven. So, I get up at around seven. I'm lucky my paper shop is just down the road from where I live.
(Interviewer)-Do you mind getting up so early?
(Paul)-Well, yes I do, actually. I'd rather lie-in, especially on Sundays. I hate the Sunday route.
(Interviewer)-Why? What's the problem with Sundays?
(Paul)-Well, on Sundays, all the papers come with supplements. You know, extra magazines, T.V guides and so on. So my bag is really heavy on Sundays. I have to put an extra saddle-bag on my bike.
(Interviewer)-So if you don't like the Sunday route, why do you do it?
(Paul)-Well, for the money, of course. The pay is better on Sundays.
(Interviewer)-Really? How much do you earn?
(Paul)-Erm, I earn two pounds for my Saturday route, I have sixteen customers to deliver to that day, and on Sundays, I earn five pounds, but the route is longer with twenty-three customers. And when I get home from my Sunday route, my mom gives me a kind of brunch, I love that.
(Interviewer)-What's your brunch?
(Paul)-Well, you know. A mixture of breakfast and lunch. My mom gives me a cooked breakfast: fried eggs, bacon, sausages, baked beans, potato bread, all the works. Yum, yum, yum!
(Interviewer)-How long does your route take?
(Paul)-Well, it depends on the weather. Normally, it takes me about an hour, but on wet or windy days it's longer, and if ever it snows like it did last year, it's worse because I couldn't use my bike and had to do the route on foot.
(Interviewer)-Do you like this job?
(Paul)-Yes. I do, actually. Even if I complain about getting up early. There are nonetheless, some perks.
(Interviewer)-Perks? Like what?
(Paul)-Well, at Christmas, lots of the customers leave tips at the news agents for the paper-boy or girl, which is pretty cool. And we all get a bonus from the manager, too. What's more, I love cycling and my mom and dad had just bought me a new bike for my rounds because my last one was too old and rusty. My new bike is really awesome; it's got lots of different gears so that it's easier to go up hills.
(Interviewer)-Lucky you. I've got one last question for you, Paul: what qualifications or qualities would you say you need to have to be a good paper-boy?
(Paul)-Qualifications? Well, you don't need any qualifications like GCSEs or such like, and you don't need to be trained for this job. No previous experience is necessary, but as far as qualities are concerned, you need to be hard-working, you definitely need to be punctual, an- you know, as the manager tells us off if we're not on time in the mornings because the customers hate receiving the paper late, and some don't hesitate to phone to complain that they don't have the paper to read during their breakfast. Erm, what else? You also need to be physically fit and strong, as you have to do the round quite quickly while carrying a heavy bag of papers. And of course, you need to know how to ride a bike. Heh. What else? Oh yeah, you have to enjoy working outside whatever the weather, come rain or shine.
(Interviewer)-Well, thank you Paul, for talking to me.
