On a day of extreme conditions with the temperatures climbing to almost forty, the blazes were fanned by strong winds and the parched landscape was eaten up with the south-close town of Vivonne Bay coming under emergency alert this afternoon. Fortunately the town was emptied last night and firefighters were right to be worried.

Rodger. Confirmed that Vivonne Bay is now evacuated, over.
My concern is that Vivonne Bay will be impacted in roughly about 20 minutes.

It's hoped a wind change may have spared the town.

That's correct but there's still the risk of a fire backing in there um, it's down on the coast so you know sometimes the winds can be a bit, um, fluky.

Vivonne Bay isn't the only part of kangaroo island under threat with the army moving into 'pandana' this morning to get people out.
Roads across the western half of the island were closed.
The danger was cleared.

The fire has jumped our containment lines at this stage and it's about to impact on the scrub, we are now out of water and the farm fire units are nearly out as well, over.

With emergency warnings in place, the wind picked up.

I'm just checking out 'pomps', we're setting up a big irrigation sprinkler on the 'shoeing shed'.

And of course, there was a 'plan b'.

Well we just see what happens when the fire comes, if it's uh.. too, too bad then we'll just leave.

Rain is on the way bringing some welcomed relief.

The humidity will be higher on the back of the rainfall which is expected in the early hours. But the condition of the fires is such that it's unlikely that it will be extinguished by the rain and they will continue to burn.

And so firefighters are destined to spend another night battling these unpredictable blazes.
