Angelina (A)
Interviewer (I)
-------------------------------------

A: ... too nice in interviewing.
I: 'Kay...
A: Yeah...
I: Well, that's a good thing, I guess.
A: Well yeah yeah, but I wouldn't get anything [mumbles]
I: [laughs] Well that's good, so.
A: [quietly] Yes, well.
I: So, uh... first of all, I want to say how much I admire you, because I'm just a guy who tells people about movies, and you're out there in your spare time makin' the world a better place, so... thank you for that, but let's--let's talk about Clover. Uh... would you say that Clover's a complicated person?
A: [nodding] Yeah, yeah.
I: Well... 'cause it seems [as if it's a?] drastic change from what--uh, what I perceive you to be, from what I see, so... how do you dive into a role like that?
A: Uh... with the help of Robert De Niro? [laughs] Uh, just--I just studied a lot... uh, uh, about that period, and that time, and, and, and the women of that time, and Matt was great to work opposite. He was so... quiet in this role, and contained, so it was... it was very easy to be frustrated, and... in scenes, and and, uh... So, but but just a lot of research really.
I: I find it really fascinating when you say 'women of--women of that time', because... to me, it's just inconceivable that women were like that, or that they didn't... have... voice their opinion, or they didn't do that--
A: Yeah, and it wasn't that long ago.
I: I know, and I'm just, I always, I al--always wanna say [mumbles] why -- why didn't they just do it, do something about it? If [...] why do you think that--?
A: I think a lot of women in that period probably did, or... did speak out more, but she's the exception, because she's also married to the CIA, so... she has a whole other... moral... prison.
I: I just found it fascinating that--you know--what--her husband--she--her husband--gone, for six years, you know, the minute, the minute they get together for that, I just said, "How does one even come back from that", when--when they show up, 'cause I love the tension when he--when he uh, he first comes home, and it's like, he's been gone, gone away for so long... Now, you mentioned uh, De Niro, as I... do all the talking here... Uh... how much... what [mumbles].... How much is De Niro different from other directors?
A: He is very conscious of... of the sensitivity of an actor... obviously. Yeah, he's very... helpful, moreso than any other director I've ever worked with, because he does understand the fun of your character.... Everything, from the aging, to the costumes, to the etiquette you need to have, to kind of, the relationships in the scenes, and so the... the way he directs a scene is not just kind of his idea for the picture of... you know, what would this scene would be interesting, he, he's an actor too, so he looks at Matt's character and where he's come from and who he is, and mine, and ... and just... he understands the internal, so much, of every individual character.
I: Does he let you do your thing?
A: Yeah, he does.
I: Lets you uh, contribute something?
A: Yeah.
I: Now I'm curious about Matt, too, because the whole time, he seemed to me... Can you guys just turn that on and off, because he seemed to me... Can you guys just turn that on and off, because he just--his posture's changing, he's walking around, he's completely--
A: Ah, no, he was [mumbles] so frustrated. I used to joke with, ... he... does this really... like bizarre pra-- I think-- like so many days, he'll tell ya, that... he kept saying, like, "De Niro, [...] less and less and less", and he felt like he was doing... you know... it was, it was an odd--odd performance. But--but yeah, we did, as soon as we'd--we'd stop, we'd both start laughing, often. Because it was also so tense, so you do tend to like, in a very tense scene where you're yelling at each other, you're not talking, ... you need to... laugh a lot.
I: But do you like doing scenes over and over again, after you feel you've gotten it, or you--because of any director [...]
A: But again, like, because he--he is so sensitive to actors, De Niro he knows when he's got the best out of you, and he doesn't drain you... for no reason, do you know? He's he's not gonna kind of make you... beat a dead horse. So he--he doesn't do that. He just, he just, gets it... and he adjusts quickly if he needs to do something else, he doesn't let you run out.
I: This one's for me because every time I see you--a photo of you or--you're in another country or another part of the world.... I fly from LA to New York and I'm jet lagged.... Is it--you've gotta have a secret for... just... not being zonked out all the time.
A: I--I do, I do have a kind of, a, a strange plan of when we need to sleep, and Brad jokes with me 'cause I [mumbles] always saying like "Okay, [snaps] time to sleep now! Time to wake up now! We have to get on schedule," and... But uh, but really, I'm, I'm--we've got so many kids and so much jet lag that--usually we just... get up at three in the morning and decide to... make up the best of it, you know? Let's watch TV, let's make--let's order up some room service, watch a movie, you know, and... and uh, not try to fight it.
I: You must just crash, it's certainly [...]
A: Sometime--
