Now many kinds of superior coffee beans are being decaffeinated in ways that conserve strong flavor. But the public suffers from a groundless fear of chemical decaffeination and prefers instead to buy water-processed decaf.
Every process of decaffeination, whether chemical- or water-based, starts with steaming the green beans to loosen the bonds of caffeine. In the chemical process, a solvent circulates through the beans.
The solvent comes into direct contact with them, carrying the caffeine with it. The drained solvent is then mixed with water, and the caffeine is drawn out to be sold.
In the water process, however, no solvent touches the beans. After the beans are steamed, they are soaked in

Processing a TV message is much more like the all-at-once processing of the ear than the linear processing of the eye reading a printed page. According to McLuhan, television is fundamentally an acoustic medium. To make this point clear, he invited people to try a simple experiment. First, turn the sound down on the TV set for one minute during your favorite program.
Now, for another minute, adjust the TV set so that you can hear the sound but you can t see any picture. Which condition was more frustrating? Which condition gave

Tsunamis are usually formed when there is an underwater earthquake, volcano, or other seismic event. The word tsunami comes from Japanese (one of the most common locations for tsunamis), "Tsu", meaning "harbor" and "nami" meaning "wave".

The most recent tsunami (as of Nov. 1 2009) according to NOAA National Weather Service was on October 7, 2009 , originating from an underwater earthquake near the Vanuatu Islands in the southwest Pacific. The wave affected other islands, including Hawaii and Fiji, as well as Alaska and California.

This tsunami however was extremely weak and insubstantial, compared to one of the most recent (and devastating) tsunamis on December 26, 2004, also known as the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake. The wave itself was in places up to 100 feet (30 meters) high. It was the fifth worst natural disaster in recorded history, and is the deadliest tsunami ever, possibly more than four times worse than the next deadliest tsunami (in terms of death toll, the costs are only rough estimates, ranging from 229,866 to 443,929 people killed).

Tsunamis are incredibly powerful. As well as their massive size, tsunamis are incredibly fast, until they reach the shore. In the open sea, they can reach speeds of over 300 mph (480 kph). In fact, they are so fast, and so wide, from a boat or airplane flying above, they would be practically invisible. They can kill hundreds of people a year, and they are most certainly a force to be reckoned with.

1. Read fun things: The most important thing is to choose texts that you care about. If you can't stop reading, that means you've chosen a good text. It does not have to be intellectual, it does not have to improve your knowledge of science or history. Don't feel guilty about reading comics, magazines, detective stories, romances, blogs, etc.

2. Read "n+1" texts: What does it mean? If your current English level is n, you should choose texts that are one level above, but not more. You want to learn something, but you don't want to come across a new word or grammar structure 3 times in each sentence. There's a simple rule here: if you're not enjoying the text, switch to an easier one.

3. Read texts written in "everyday" English. If you want to use contemporary, natural English, you have to learn contemporary, natural phrases. Not all texts contain such phrases. Many books contain literary phrases that are simply not used by normal educated native speakers.

4. Start by reading texts by the same author (or texts on the same subject). Each author has his/her own vocabulary and grammar. For example, when you read a book by Michael Crichton, you come across a lot of scientific vocabulary. Afterwards, it is easier to read another Michael Crichton novel than to read a book by a different author.

If you are a beginner reader, jumping from author to author (or topic to topic) can cause frustration because every new text will seem difficult. You may feel like you are making no progress. This is not healthy for your motivation. Reading a few similar texts gives you a sense of accomplishment, which can be very motivating.

Music can be a very effective method of learning English. In fact, it is often used as a way of improving comprehension. The best way to learn though, is to get the lyrics (words) to the songs you are listening to and try to read them as the artist sings. There are several good internet sites where one can find the words for most songs. This way you can practice your listening and reading at the same time. And if you like to sing, fine.
