1914. The diary of eighteen year old Walter Bush.
War is coming and Walter has just enlisted in the British army.
He expects his Mum to be proud of him - but she's recently lost her husband and fears she may now lose her son too.
Before they set off for the front line Walter and his best friend, Harry Parker, have a last evening on the town. They feel proud and important when they are recognised in their uniforms and excited about the journey to France.
Walter is sick during the sea-crossing, then disappointed to find that France isn't all 'wine and sunshine'. For three days all he and Harry do is march through the mud, the distant boom of the guns growing gradually ever louder.
Eventually Walter and Harry are posted to the trenches on the front line. The Sergeant explains the basics of trench warfare - 'going over the top'. Harry is keen to know when the next attack will be. But Walter is feeling very different. He looks at the ladder placed against the side of the trench and hopes the command to go over the top will never come.
1915. Walter Bush continues his diary from the trenches. Walter had told his mother that the war would be over by Christmas.
But now, a year later, there's still no end in sight. Walter and Harry pass their time cleaning their equipment, doing guard duty and wondering what the Germans soldiers are doing in their trenches nearby.
Then come rumours that there will shortly be an attack. The big guns start shelling and Walter spends an anxious night, knowing that in the morning it will be their turn to 'go over the top'.
Walter's diary continues from a military hospital back in the UK. He can't remember much about the attack - only that the whistles blew and that he started running across no-man's land towards the Germans. Walter's part in the war is over, but he still has an important job to do.
Walter visits Harry Parker's mother to tell her that he was with Harry at the last and that his friend died without suffering. But in reality Walter doesn't have any idea how Harry died, only that his friend also went over the top and never came back. One things he is sure of though: that he will always remember Harry Parker and all the other comrades he served alongside.

Febraury 3,2014 <Writing first In Chinese? In English?>It's been a long time since I wrote my last entry in English. Maybe it's due to my habit of writing in Chinese first. / ...due to my instinct of first writing in Chinese. I feel Chinese is easier than English, so I am used to writing first in Chinese. Whenever I finish my writing an entry in Chinese, I find it is not as easy to write in English afterwards, since I would like to simplify my vocabulary in English compared to Chinese. Many of you have heard about the unusually large amount of snow we're getting here in the Midwest. Have you also heard about roofs collapsing? Last night, the third roof in our area collapsed from the weight of the snow and ice.

Many people have been trying to keep as much snow and ice off the roofs of our houses as possible. Even if the roof doesn't completely collapse, it can cause cracks in the roof. If that happens, water will begin to seep into the attic and eventually down to the ceilings of the upper stories, or in a single-level house, the main floor.

It can be very dangerous to climb up a ladder and pull the snow off the roof. Some people use a special snow rake, others use a broom or snow shovel, and others use whatever they can find. It isn't a very easy job.

We recently got most of the snow off our roof, but with the frigid temperatures, it's hard to get the ice off. We were able to eliminate some, but hopefully we'll get some sun soon which will melt some more of it.

Roadwork has definitely been at the cornerstone of a fighters conditioning program since the beginning of boxing training.

While this has been tradition, there are better ways to train. I trained a fighter last year who was mentally conditioned to believe that long distance roadwork was essential during fight prep.

I was scared to take it out of his program just in case my hypothesis was wrong, but, I did it anyway because I felt strongly that it wasn’t necessary.

We did a majority of his conditioning work while doing his actual sport and to supplement, we would alternate short burst of running with dynamic flexibility.

He came into the fight in great condition. Not noticeably better than usual but certainly no worse either. Since then, his experience has given me more confidence to experiment more. I’ll keep you posted.

Why is the shop famous?

I'm willing to give hints for the guessing game. Try not to cheat. In the past it was a grocer's shop. The owners lived above the shop.

But there is more to it than that. If you know for definate wait and give others a chance. The shop is not famous for what is sold there.

What else could make it special?

Could there once have been an iron in there? (a cryptic clue).
As I said it was a cryptic clue. If you are young you won't understand the clue but if you are in your 40s or older it might be easier to guess.

Some soviets might not have liked the iron that was in there. The iron started cold but got warmer over time. I think you can answer now:)

It was where she was born, or rather where she was brought up (she was possibly born in a hospital).

Her dad owned the shop which sold vegetables and she and her family lived above it when she was a child.

There has not to my knowledge ever been a suggestion that he did not earn them fairly.

He felt his comrades had died for nothing because of jewish traitors.
He felt that if it had not been for Jewish traitors they would have won. He started WW2 to avenge their deaths.

Many believe Iraq War 2 (the US vs Iraq) was about money. It wasn't.

GWB did it as a present for his dad. He wanted to personally get rid of Saddam as his dad failed.
It wasn't about money. It was about getting rid of a bad man.

The term "semantics of programming languages" suffered embarrassment:
it became an application of mathematical methods to the description/definition of program execution.

As a result, people who get into this maze to explore the exact meaning of the programming language constructs (PL) stops at a loss:

do I have to learn all this "math" to understand how the program works?

For example, on PL/I or Algol 68. Obviously, for Algol 68 we can dispense without W-grammars, and for PL/I without VDM.
