Industrial growth started after the Civil War. Major was around coal mining, oil, railways, manufacturing of steel goods. Urbanization was the main trend, especially in the North. During this period the usa became he world’s leading industrial power.
In 1914 the First World War started. On one side there were the Allies (France, Great Britain and Russia). On the other side the main countries were Germany and Austria, who were called the Central Powers. The Americans wanted to keep out of the war. But they found it difficult to stay imperial for long. The trade between the USA and the Allies grew quickly, German leaders decided to sink American ships sailing towads Allied ports. In April 1917 Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany. The first American military mobilization on foreign soil wasn’t until 1917 when the US entrad the WWI against Germany and helped France and England. US president W. Wilson helped negotiate a peace treaty in 1918. When the war was over, the USA was the richiest credit country in the world.

The „Roaring Twenties“ brought large economic growth until the Great Depression started after the stock market crash in1929. In the next decade unemployment was high and poverty widespread. The Depression lasted till the beginning of the WWII.

In 1932 Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Democratic Party candidate, was elected president. He introduced a series of measures, which were called the New Deal. These made Roosevelt very popular. He was the only American president who served three successive terms and was elected to a fourth (but he died in 1945)

In 1941 the Japaneese launched an air raid, which targeted the naval base of Pearl Harbour and the USA entred the WWII on the side of the Allies. President Harry Truman ordered the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima nad Nagasaki. During the war Roosevelt and later Truman were negotiating with the Soviets ( led by Stalin ) and the British about how the war should be fought, about founding the United Nations Organization and about structuring the post-war world.

The „Cold War“ period after the WWII saw increasing mistrust between the USA and the Soviet Union. There were several war conflicts e.g. Korean War, but generally the enemy countries tried to limit each other’s influence around the world.

The post-war period was a time of economic expansion. The US continued as a world leader in scientific, medical and technological achievements. The Soviet Union was the first to put a man in space, the US has the first man to walk on the Moon (1969, Neil Armstrong)

The 60s saw great social change and unrest. American blacks demanded an end to racial discrimination through the civil right movement – civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968. The assassinations of president John F. Kennedy in 1963 and Robert Kennedy in 1968 shocked the world.
The Vietnam War brought further internal unrest. This continued until the 70s with the political corruption – the Watergate Scandal and the resulting resignation of president Richard Nixon (he was forced to resing). US troops were finally withdrawn from Vietnam in 1975.

After the Watergate Scandal Gerald Ford replaced Nixon and had to deal with serious economic recession.

13 original colonies were developing rapidly. The British Parliament, protecting the interests of the British manufacturers, passed a number of laws to paralyse the rising industry and commerce in the colonies. The British government imposed duties on tea, paper, glass and other articles of general consumption.

On December 16th, 1773, North Americans, dressed as Indians, threw a cargo of tea into Boston harbour as a protest against the duties imosed on tea. This event is known as „The Boston Tea Party“.
In September 1774 the First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia. The colonies declared a boycott of English goods.
In 1775 the firts shots of the war were fired, when the English soldiers were trying to seize an illegal store of arms at Concord.
On July 1776 the Second Continental Congress met again in Philadelphia. The colonies declared themselves independent and signed the famous „Declaration of Independence“. The author of the document was Thomas Jefferson. The Congress appointed George Washington to take command in the American Continental Army.

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE included the famous declaration „that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unlienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness.“

The WAR OF INDEPENDENCE (1775-1781) lasted over 6 years. The fighting ended when Washington, aided by the French army and navy, surrounded the British forces at Yorktown in October 1781. The piece settlement signed two years later recognized the independence, freedom and sovereignity of the colonies.

Not all the citizens were united behind the revolution. A large group called „Loyalists“ supported the British monarchists and many of them returned back to England after the victory of the colonies. The revolutionary forces themselves were split into the conservative wing headed by G. Washington and the progressive wing headed by T. Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine.

George Washington became the first president. The new Constitution wasn’t addopted (1789) by all states unanimously and ratification took a long time (until 1792) because people under the leadership of Jefferson demanded additional safeguards for their liberties. And so Ten Amendents, known as the „Bill of Rights“, were added under the pressure of public ippinion. They contain the basic rights and freedoms of individual citizens. The Constitution was at that time the most demoratic in the world.

Throughout the 19th century, the US expanded its teritory but economic and political differences grew between the Northern and Southern states. In the south, the economy was based on agriculture and slavery. Northern states were more industrial and slavery was illegal. This led to the events of the years 1860 and 1861, when 11 southern states seceded from the Union and attempted to form their own government. This caused the beginning of the „Civil War“ under the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, lasting from 1861 to 1865. The North was victorious and slavery was abolished (Emancipatin Procalmation in 1863).

The twelwe years tht followed the Civil War are called the period of Reconstruction. The black people were given the right to vote and a number of the were elected into the U.S. Comgress. Although blacks were free, they remanied completely segregated in US society until the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s led by Martin Luther King Jr.

The discovery of America is attributed to Christopher Columbus, an Italian sailor. But the first white men, who had reached the shores of North America, were the Vikings around the year 1000.
In 1492 Columbus thought he had reached Asia, but in fact, he had discovered the Bahama Islands. Columbus originally sailed to India and that’s why he called the natives „the Indians“ and then on account of the colour of their skin they were called Red Indians.

America recieves its name from an Italian, Amerigo Vespuci, who explored the coast of Brasil in the early 1500s.

After the explorations of the Spanish and French in the New World, the English were among the last to settle the North American continent. The real British colonozation began at the beginning of 17th century. The first English colony was called VIRGINIA (in honour of the Queen Elizabeth I) and the first successful settlement in Virgina was established in 1607, under King James I. After whom it was called JAMESTOWN. Huge tobacco plantations brought settlers considerable profit and they naturally wanted to increase their profits and enlarge their plantations, but more workers were needed. The Red Indians weren’t good workers because they weren’t used to hard physical work (their main tasks were hounting and fighting) and their close knowledge of nature made it easy for them to escape. The result was that planters found the solution in the Negro People of Africa. Thus the first shipload of African slaves landed in North America in 1619 and slavery became most firmly established in the Southern colonies.

In 1620 a group of Puritan refugees from England, known as the Pilgrim Fathers, reached the coast of North America in their ship called „Mayflower“. They landed on the Massachussetts coast and founded a settlement there, which they called PLYMOUTH, in memory of the English port of the same name. This was the beginning of the northern English colonies in America, called New England. The puritans emigrated from England to escape the religious persecution under the Stuarts. The first year in America was difficult. After a very hard work, the newcomers and Indians gave thanks to God for the first harvest and made a huge meal together. It was on the fourth Thursday in Novermber 1621. In memory of it Thanksgiving Day is celebrated annualy. The northern colonies were prosperous from the very start.

The English colonies in the South (Virginia, North Carolina) were separated from the North (New England) by a Dutch colony. Its chief town was New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. In 1664 New Amsterdam was captured by the English and Charles II granted this area to his brother James, Duke of York, after whom it was renamed NEW YORK.

Czech history – this is a large quantity of many important events, dates and personalities. I have chosen only one of them and it's the period of Luxemburghs, because I think that one this kings was very important for our country and it's (her) next history. His name is Charles IV. But he wasn't the first man of this family on the czech throne.

The first Luxembourgh ruling in our country was John of Luxemburgh – the son of Henry the seventh Luxembourgh. Jindřich became the Roman king and he wanted to get over the czech aristocracy, so he wedded his son with Elisabeth the Přemyslid, the incoming czech queen. John was crowned in the year 1310. He was a good king, who got well along with the czech aristocracy. This proclaim the “Inaugural diploma”, that ratify some rights to the aristocrats. For example the king undertook not to invest the functions to the foreigners. He interested himself only for the foreign policy.

We can see his contribution for our kingdom. John of Luxembourgh let here stamp the gold coins and in the time of his rule the bishopric in the Prague was upgrated to the archbishopric. He brought to the kingdom some conquests: Chebsko, Upper Lusatia, Wroclaw and the north part of Italy.

John send his first-born son Wenceslas to France to education and he wedded him with Blanche of Valois. Then, in the year 1346, he was killed in the battle of Kresčak and his son became the czech king Charles IV.

Charles IV. was interested in the events in his country more than his father. In the year 1355 he was crowned as the Roman caesar and Bohemia became the political centre of the empire. Prague became the capital city and there was build the first university in our country. Charles let built many castles too – for example Karlsberg (Kašperk), Karlskrone (Rodyně) or the best-known czech castle – Karlštejn.
Charles wasn't only the ruler, he was a very clever person too. He was able to speak five languages – Latin, German, Czech, French and Italian. He wrote a autobiography called “Vita Caroli”. He respected St. Wenceslas as the biggest czech saint. He let build the St. Wenceslas chapel in the St. Witus Cathedral and the Prague castle let he rename as the Castle of St. Wenceslas. From this time is the St. Wenceslas crown. Charles self made a list of the rules of the coronation ceremony. He had four wifes: the first was the Blanche of Valois, the next one Anna of Falc, Anna of Svidnik and the last and the only wife, which lived longer then he, was Elisabeth of Pomořany.

During the Charles life it happened many changes in our politic. The situation between the aristocrats and the king did quiet down for the long time and the high aristocracy got more part in the driving of the country. The king's assistants were for example Ernest of Pardubice or John Očko of Vlašim. One of the important documents of his rule is the “Maiestas Carolina”. It was a constitution of the czech kingdom, but the king was starved by the aristocracy to cancel it. Next very important document was the “Gold Bull of Charles”, in that he fixed the rules for the vote of the Roman monarch. He said that the majority of electers has to agree to vote the monarch and they all have to speak Czech, Italian and German. He enacted the woman succession, when there are no man successors. This Bull stood till the end of the Roman empire.

Charles had three sons. The oldest son Wenceslas was crowned as the czech king in his age of two years and in the age of fifteen he became the Roman caesar. The second son Zikmund and the third son John became only some domains in the kindgdom.
Wenceslas IV. ruled in economic and political strong state, but he had many problems with the church. The biggest problem he had to lose was the papacy schism.The king was loyal to the Avignon pope, but the Prague archbishop John of Jenštejn received the pope in Rome. There were many reform-gospellers too and the church was often criticised. The situation was worse and worse and there was a good atmosphere for the rise of the Hussite movement.

British history is an interesting topic with many important events and personalities, which have influenced the history more or less. This topic is so large, that it can be devided into several smaller parts. I can name some very important periods from the whole history, for example the Tudor period, which is mostly known because of one famous king from the house of Tudors, his name is Henry VIII. Next important periods are the period of the Stuarts and the English revolution or the Industrial Revolution and the Era of queen Viktoria’s rule in the second part of the 19th century.

I think, that o the most importants parts of the British history belongs the period of the Primeval Ages, in that were the British Isles settled for the first time. The first inhabitans of England were the Iberians and the Beaker folks.
The next people, who came to England were the Celts. One tribe of them is called the Britons. They crossed the English Channel about 700 years before Christ. They lived in a tribal organisation and they brought many new knowledges to the islands. They were farmers and they already knew the making iron weapons and instruments. Celts had their own religion too – they were polytheistic and they adored many gods. The Celtic tribes were important for England for example because of their contribution of some words to the English language (cradle = kolébka, slogan = heslo).

In the year 55 B. C. England was discovered by the famous roman emperor Julius Caesar, but he said, Britain isn’t deserved for the conquesting and he let it be. Only in 43 A. D. the Romans conquered the island under the command of the caesar Claudius. The Romans named the area as “Britannia”. They occupied England and Wales for 300 years but they didn’t succeed in beating Scotland’s tribes, called the Picts and the Scots. To the contribution of the Romans belong the new system of trade, the knowledge of money and the using of this. They made lots for the people too – they built the tiled (dlážděný) roads and they started to built and use the town bath. We can find even other survivals from this period: all cities and towns, which end with the words –chester or –caster (Manchester, Lancaster, Chesterfield, Leicester atc.) were founded as the roman fortifications.

After the Romans left, Britain was settled by the Teutonic tribes, which came there from the area of Germany. It were three tribes, which were most famous: Anglos, Saxons and Jutes (- ti byli první). In the 7th century they controlled most of the island, which they called Angloland. The Britons were defeated and they had to move to the north and west and their descendants are the people, who live in Wales, Ireland and Scotland. Anglo-saxons made a higher level of the state organisation and they devided England into 7 kingdoms: Wessex, Essex, Sassex, Kent, North-Umbria, Mercia and East Anglia. But there were many struggles between this kingdoms, so there was a need to unite them. The first unification of them was made in the year 829 by the king Egbert from Wessex and it was because of the Danish invasion. There was one legendary king too – king Arthur and his Knights of the Round table. In the period of Anglo-saxons the pope Gregory I. decided to convert the them to Christianity and by the eighth century all England was Christian.
At the end of the 8th century was Britain invaded with the Danish tribes of the Viking raiders. They started to conquer the northern province of Northumbria and they made York as their capital. The Anglos begann to fight against them and the first king, who stopped them was Alfred the Great, who built many fortresses and England’s first fighting ships. He won over them in the battle of Eddington in 878 and he received the peace with them. Since that was England divided into to parts: the area of the Danelaw and the Alfred’s land. After his death the whole England became Danish and it started the period of the Danish kings of the English throne.
The first Danish king on the English throne was Cnut (Knut, Canuta), who started the real feudalism and he ended the tribe system in England. He was king in the Denmark at the same time, but he didn’t make the differences between this two nationalities in England.

After his dead there were many struggles of his sons, which were fighting for the throne and the power of them was weeker and weeker. The next kings after his dead were Edward the Confessor, who changed the capital from Winchester to London, and William the Duke of Normandy, who killed the new king after Edward (Harold) and so he became the English king. It was the beginning of the normand dynasty on the English throne.

The Celts arrived 2500 to 3000 ago. Their language survives in Welsh and Gaelic. England was added to the Roman Empire in 43 AD. The Romans built camps, forts and roads through the land and also Hadrian's wall as the protection against the invasion of the Celtic tribes. The Romans towns and forts were connected roads, which was used by British for many centuries. The Jutes, the Angles and the Saxon tribes arrived from German lands. They fought with Danes from the 8th and 11th centuries. The last successful invasion was by French speaking Normans led by William, Duke of Normandy, who became William the Conqueror after defeating the Saxon King Harold in the Battle of Hastings in 1066. William the Conqueror established a strong central government and appointed Norman noblemen to high position. The opposition by nobles forced King John to sign Magna Carta in 1215, a guarantee of rights and the rule of law. In 15th century was in state war of the Roses between House of York and House of Lancaster. Religious independence from Rome was secured when the Church of England was separated from the authority of the Pope in 1543 by King Henry VIII. Under Queen Elizabeth I. Britain became a major sea power, leading to the founding of colonies in the new world and the expansion of trade with Europe and the Orient. In 1588 England defeated the Spanish Armada and this. Together with the explorations carried out by Sir Francis Drake, helped established British supremacy on the seas. Scotland was united with England when James VI. Of Scotland was crowned James I. Of England in 1603. The Act of Union in 1707 Scotland with England. A struggle between Parliament and the Stuart kings led to a bloody Civil War. The country was divided between the supporters of Charles I., who wanted to rule absolutely, and the supporters of Parliament. The monarchy was restored in 1660 but the "Glorious revolution" in 1688 confirmed the Parliament. Technological innovations , such as James Watt with steam engine or steam locomotive by George Stephenson, led to the Industrial Revolution. The 13 North American colonies were lost, but replaced by growing empires in Canada and India. Large parts of Africa and Asia were added to the empire during the reign of Queen Victoria. Through victorious World War I. Britain suffered huge economic losses. The land suffered major bombing damage in World War II., but held out against Germany after the fall of France in 1940.
Industrial growth went on in postwar period, but Britain lost its leading position to other powers. Labour governments passed programmers nationalizing some basic industries and expanding social security. The Thatcher conservative government has however increased the role of private enterprise.

Say Canterbury and people will start talkking about a beatiful cathedral and Thomas Becket, about the „Canterbury Tales“ and the pilgrims as well as about the Black prince.Yes, Canterbury has been an important place for centuries.Nowadays, it is the mother city of the Church of England and the seat of the Archbishop.Thomas Becket lived in the 12th century.He was the Archbishop of Canterbury and a frind of King Henry II.As time went by, Thomas and the King started to have different opinions and Thomas was sent to exile to France.After he came back, he was murdered in the cathedral in canterbury on December 29th 1170.He was not forgotten as the king wished.People wanted to see the place where Thomas had been killed and so for centuries pilgrims travelled to Canterbury from all over the country and abroad.Geoffrey Chaucer wrote a book about these pilgrims Canterbury Tales are the stories which the pilgrims told each other on their way to make the journey shorter and more pleasant.In the Middle Ages Canterbury became one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Europe.The cathedral as we can see it today is mainly from the 15th century but some parts are much older.A lot of famous people were buried there.Among them, the Black Prince.He mmight be the most interesting for Czech people because he fought, on the English side of course, at the Battle of Crecy in 1346 where our king Jan Lucemburský lost his life.
The interesting period werw the Normans.In thata time the English king was Edward the Confessor.He died in 1066 witjout a direct heir(přímý potomek).Nobody knew who could be the king.Finaly Edward’s brother-in-law Harold became the king.But a Norman Duke , William, want to seize(zmocnit se) the throne.He defeated Harold at the Bittle of Hastings in 1066.Than he became king as William the Conqueror.He brought French to Englend and it was the official language at courts.Willam had The Tower of London built, too.He wanted to impress and frightened the English.
In the 15th century there was a struggle(zápas) for the throne between the House of Lancaster and the House of York.This was called the Wars of the Roses, because Yorkists used a white rose as its emblem and Lancasters had a red rose as a symbol.Henry Tudor, who came from the House of Lancaster, wan the Bottle of Bosworth Field in 1485.In this year the Tudor period started.
This period is important for the decline(pokles, úpadek) of fedaulism.It was a time of rapid changes, great voyages of discovery, too.
Henry Tudor became as Henry VII.He married the heiress of the House of York Elizabeth of York and he stopped the war, he made the peace with Yorkist.He arranged(zařídit) marriages between his daughter and the king of Scotland and between his son Henry and Catherine of Aragon to strenghten(zesílit) his position.
Henry VII. And Elizabeth of York had 4 children.Arthur, the oldest son, died before he could become king, and his younger brother became king as Henry VIII.He inherited(zdědit) great wealth, because his father had been very thriftly(šetrný).He is very famous, too, because of his 6 wives.Henry wanted to have a son, but woth his first wife Catherine of Aragon they only had a dauhter Mary I.After 18 years of marriage, he became impatient and wanted to get rid of Catherine.He asked the pope for permission to divorse.The pope refused.And so Henry VIII. Established his own church, the Church of England and he became the head of this church.Then he devorsed Catherine.Their only child Mary I. is called Bloody Mary, too, because she was a strong catholic, she persecuted Protestants.She had. Some Protestant burnt at the stake, too while she was a Queen.
Henry’s second wife was Ann Boleyn, who gave him only a douhhter, too.Her name was Elizabeth and her mother was executed.
Henry’s third wife’s name was Jane Seymour and she gave birth to a boy, Edward.The other Henry’s wives didn’t give him any children.
Edward and Mary died soon, than Elizabeth I. came to the throne in 1558.She was a protestant unlike her half-sister Mary.The period, when Elizabeth I ruled, is called the Golden Age.
King Philiip II. of Spain wanted to conquer England.England was in grave danger.But the Englishter English ships defeated a huge spanish fleet called Armada and won a battle in the English Chanel in 1588.
Elizabeth I. never married, so when she sied, in 1603, there was nobody who could became king or queen.Elizabeth’s nearest ralative was James VI. Of Scotland.And so he became the king of Scotland ane the king of England too.

Stonehenge
Eight miles north of Salisbury is a large circle of stones, which is called Stonehenge.Nobody knows why it was built or what it was used to.Was it an ancient(starověký) cemetery?There are many graves around the monument.Was it a kind of observatory, where astronomers studied the stars and the planets?Was it a place where witches and magicians offered human sacrifices(oběť) to the gods?Or was it a temple, where the ancient Britons worshipped(vzívat) the Sun?The monument faces the point on the horizon where the sun rises on Midsummer’s Day.We shall never know the real answer.
Work started on Stonehange around 1800 BC, but the monument, whose ruins you can see today, was built four hundred years later, around 1400 BC.
The ruins stand in the centre of a huge circle in diameter.The circle is formed by a bannk and a ditch.The bank is now less high, but it was probably much higher when it was built.
The ruins consist of two stone circles and two stone horseshoes.In the centre of the inner horseshoe there is a long stone called the Altar stone.These stones were joined by a continous line of stones, which lay on the top of the uprights.But most of theese have fallen down.

Lots of people have said to me that reading English books would help with my English ability. However, I didn't try reading very much before.

One of the reasons is that I really like intercultural communication. When I have free time, I would rather chat with people than read books by myself.

Last month, I finally decided to read Haruki Murakami's "Norwegian Wood" in English. I've reached 109 pages out of the 389 pages. I was amazed that I could do this since my reading speed is really slow.

When I just started reading it, I found out that one of my Lang-8 friends was also reading the same book in Japanese. Of course, since I blabbed to my friend that I would read it, I couldn't give up in the middle.

I think that it was my luck to find him reading the same book. It is good for two people to read the same book in different languages while encouraging each other. Otherwise, I would become lazy easily or worse, I would stop reading and probably give an old song-and-dance-routine excuse as to why.

Having said that, I still have doubts about if it really helps with my Egnlish ability. While reading it, I've found some words and phrases that I don't know. I occasionally check some of the words, but not all of them. Even so, I couldn't memorize them , and moreover, I couldn't use them freely in a conversation.

Do you think that it will really help me with my English?
