ある殿様から、高齢になった者を不要として山に遺棄するようにというお触れが出る。ある家でも泣く泣く親を山に捨てようとするが情にほだされ、密かに家の床下にかくまう。やがて殿様からいくつかの難題が出されるが、それらを老親の知恵によって解決する。老人も知恵があり粗末にできぬことを知った殿様は、姥捨てのお触れを撤回する。
