単語の成り立ち
日本手話の単語の成り立ちとして以下のようなものが知られている。
1. 物（道具，食材，物体など）を取り扱っている様子が手話化したもの。
2. 人の動き，動作が手話化したもの。
3. 対象物の形を描くことにより手話化させたもの。
4. 対象物を指し示すことによって表現しようとするもの。
5. 意図的に抽象化，意味づけして表現されたもの。手指を何かに見たてる。
6. 指文字がそのまま，または若干の変化を経て手話化したもの。
7. 文字，漢字，マーク，デザイン等を描くことによる表現。
8. 数詞からの派生によるもの。
9. キュードスピーチからの派生によるもの。
10. これらの組み合わせ。
