The Hen and the Golden Eggs.

Chapter 1: The Hen

Once upon a time, there was a farmer who was very poor. He worked really hard but did not earn a lot of money and did not have a lot to eat. One day after returning from his work, he was very hungry.

‘What am I going to eat tonight ?’ he thought.

Then he heard a hen outside and thought this would be a good meal for dinner. It was pretty hard to catch it, but he finally caught it after two minutes. He then got back into his tiny house and grabbed a knife. He was ready to cut the hen, but as he was about to do so, it started to speak!

Chapter 2 : I will help you
Oh, farmer, please don’t kill me! I will help you.’

‘What’s this ?’, said the farmer. ‘A hen that can speak? I’m becoming crazy.

‘No, you’re not, and if you listen to me, I will make you rich.

‘How can you possibly make me rich? You’re just a hen, and you’re worth nothing.’

‘If you don’t kill me, I will give you a golden egg every day.’

‘You’re lying; you are just trying to save your life.’

‘I promise you this is true.’

‘Ok, but if you’re lying, I will eat you tomorrow.’

Chapter 3: The surprise
When he woke up the next day, the farmer went to the hen and found a golden egg as promised. He was amazed at this and wondered how he could spend his money. He didn’t want to save it. He wanted to be popular among the villagers, so he went to the nearest pub and ordered the best meals and drinks for everyone. The bartender knew the farmer was poor and wondered how he would pay for everything, but after seeing the golden egg, he brought everything the farmer wanted – sweet potatoes with beef, dozens of bottles of wine, and gallons of beer. After finishing his own meal, the farmer paid the bartender, who was delighted to get a golden egg.

Chapter 4: More than you can imagine.
The same thing happened for weeks. The farmer no longer worked since he had found this marvelous hen that gave him a golden egg every day. He would wake up no sooner than 8 o’clock, pick up his golden egg and go straight to the same pub where he was now very popular among the villagers. Indeed, he invited them for both lunch and dinner.

One day, however, he was starving and thirsty and ordered more than usual for everyone. Actually, he ordered so much that he could not pay for everything.

‘I know you always pay for everything with your golden egg’, said the bartender, ‘but a single egg is not enough for today’s bill.’

‘You know what ?’, said the farmer, ‘I will buy your pub. Tomorrow, I will give you more golden eggs than you can imagine.’

Chapter 5 : Back to work

The farmer went back home, ready to get more golden eggs.

‘This hen is giving me one golden egg every day, so there must be a treasure inside its stomach,’ he thought. He thus decided to kill the hen to get dozens of golden eggs. Unfortunately, he could find nothing inside it and was very disappointed. Indeed, now that the hen was dead, he could no longer pay for the villager’s meals, and his popularity rapidly decreased. Moreover, because he had not saved any money, he had no choice but to work hard again to pay his debts.

People who always want more sometimes lose everything.
