Summuranum, that appears instead on Antonino's itinerary (200a.C.) and in the Tabula Peutingeriana probably designated another statio on the same Regio-Capuam, or on a roadroute, alternative to this, that was running towards the valley, close to the inhabited centre of Morano and Castrovillari, near what is called contrada Fauciglia. At the roman age date back the remainder of an ancient fortalice, on which during the Norman age rose, at the top of the hill whereMorano stands, the original core of the first fortifications. Suspended between the sky and the mountains, the Castle, for centuries defending the access to Calabria, was rebuilt and enlarged in the first half of the 500 by Pietro Antonio Sanseverino, prince of Bisignano, feudatory of Morano; during the Seventeenth century the fortress of Morano passed to the Spinelli, princes of Scalea, new masters of Morano till the 1806. The same feudatories owned also the large estate (the Palace), situated on the lower part of the town, near the arc that surmounts the ancient State road of Calabria. During the medieval age it was feud of Apollonio Morano, of the Fasanella and of Antonello Fuscalodi; during the Aragonese age it passed to the Sanseverino of Bisignano. In 1614 it was sold to the Spinelli of Scalea that kept it until the abolition of feudality (1806). The appellation of Calabro, for this centre of the high Cosenza area, is an addition of 1863, to distinguish it from Morano sul Po'.
