Note to recorder:

Natural speed. Not too fast.

Emily Davison was a British suffragette and a women’s rights activist. She is famous for what happened to her in June 1913 at the Epsom Derby, a famous horserace. She walked onto the track and threw herself in front of the King’s horse. She was knocked down and seriously injured. Emily Davison died a few days later in hospital. She died as a brave martyr. Even today, her intentions remain unclear. We don’t know if it was suicide or simply an unfortunate accident. Apparently, Emily wanted to attach the scarf of the suffragettes to the horse’s bridle. She wanted to attract people’s attention by doing so. She knew that the eyes of the world would be focused on the race. She wanted women to have the right to vote and she was ready to sacrifice herself. “Deeds not words” was the slogan of the Suffragettes.
