The book 1984 was written in 1948. It was inspired by the Soviet Union and other dictatorships. The story takes place in the future. The people are very unhappy because many things are forbidden. For example, they mustn’t fall in love or have friends. Television is used for propaganda, so everyone is brainwashed. But the television has a camera and watches everything they do. There are no secrets. The police is called the Thought Police. They control what people think. In the town, enormous posters declare “Big Brother is watching you”. Big Brother represents the government.
