When we declare something to be a myth, this can have the connotation that the thing in question is unfounded or untrue. For decades, people believed there was a monster living in Loch Ness in Scotland, but scientific investigation has found no proof of this creature’s existence. So, we say that the Loch Ness monster is a myth. There is no such thing. Clearly, myths have an important role to play in any society. What people believe has a huge impact on the way they behave. Myths can shape our world view and thereby influence our choices. We could argue that the idealised world of myths can help us to make sense of some of the pain and suffering in our lives.
