If we make lifelong enemies of the English instead of settling things down, we also make enemies of France, the United States and any significant country because Britannia rules the waves. Do you think the French will back us when they have just fought alongside the Brits during the war? At the moment, we stand alone and we can’t face any kind of aggression.
Things have gone quite aresaways for me: I used to be Private Sean Donegal in the British Army, yet now I am Lieutenant Sean Donegal of the Irish Republican Army. I was at the battle of the Somme, and I can tell you that the war you want to go on with will only turn our lands and families into a feast for crows.
Let’s make it clear: we all are Gaels here, and we all pledged allegiance to the Republic of Ireland: we’re not discussing a surrender, but if we can win this war or not ; and this treaty is far better that what we can hope for.
We will not become independent at once, but we will have time to organise our Nation and our army freely because the Treaty Ports confines the royal troops outside our territory into three tiny ridiculous bases. Right now, our courage and commitment to a free and peaceful Ireland is respected all around the world, but if we tear ourselves apart and withdraw from negotiations, we will weaken our position and discredit our cause.
By rejecting this treaty, we are denying our land any kind of future because our isolation will make us more vulnerable than ever.
