自然界を循環する炭素
大気中のＣＯ２は、自然界ではさまざまな「炭素を含む物質」に変化しながら循環する。 炭素を含む物質とは、たとえば、炭素イオンや糖、デンプン、タンパク質、石炭、炭素カルシウムなどがそうだ。 これらは地球を移動したのち、ふたたびＣＯ２として大気にもどる。 そのため、どれだけのＣＯ２が循環しているかをあらわすときには、ＣＯ２ではなく炭素の量であらわされる。 イラストは、１９９０年代の自然界での炭素循環である。矢印の数値は、１年間での移動量（単位は億トン/年）。 ただし、火山や地殻内運動などについては数値は示していない。
