イオは火山活動を行っていることが確認された地球以外の最初の天体である。火山のひとつは噴煙を200 - 300km上空へ秒速1kmの速さで吹き上げていた（ボイジャー1号の撮影したイオの写真を解析していた際、NASAの科学者リンダ・モラビトが偶然に発見した）。その他にも数多くの噴火山があり、25km以上のサイズを持つカルデラ地形は100個以上も見つかっている。火口から噴出しているのは硫黄やナトリウムなどを含む物質と考えられ、これらは宇宙空間まで到達していると考えられている。
