그는 1989년 영화 <추락하는 것은 날개가 있다>로 데뷔하여, <구로 아리랑>, <서울의 달>, <아들과 딸>, <야망의 세월>, <우리 읍내>(연극), <에쿠우스>(연극), <택시드리벌>(연극) 1992년 <우리사랑 이대로>, <우리들의 일그러진 영웅>, 1993년 <사라는 유죄>, 1997년 <넘버3>, 1998년 <조용한 가족>, 1999년 <쉬리>, 1999년 <해피엔드>, 2001년 <파이란> 등에 출연하였고, 2002년에 개봉한 영화 <취화선>은 칸 영화제에 출품하였다. 2003년에는 <올드보이>에 출연하여 세계적인 영화배우 니콜라스 케이지도 감동케 하는 등 세계적인 영화배우로 자리잡았으며, <태극기 휘날리며>에서 카메오로 출연해 주인공 장동건에게 맞아죽는 북한군 대좌역을 맡았다.
