MEN ARE BIG BABIES
Anna had always wanted to be a nurse. When she came to England, she applied for a job in a London hospital. Anna earned very little money and her work was hard. But she enjoyed it. She made the beds, carried trays at mealtimes, helped to wash patients.
One morning she was alone in the men’s ward. She was trying to push an empty bed. Some of the men were drinking their tea, others were reading. But when they saw Anna at work, they put down their cups and books.
- You are too pretty to do hard work like that. Let me help you.
- You mustn’t get out of bed, Mr. Macgregor.
- Call me Jim. I’m not ill any more. I’m leaving hospital tomorrow.
At that moment the man in the next bed began to groan. Anna ran to the bed and looked at the man. He was young and good looking, his face was rather white and his eyes were half shut.
- Hold my hand. I am going to die.
Anna took his hand. “Where is the pain?”
- Everywhere, all over my body.
- I’ll call a sister.
- No, don’t leave me.
- Jack’s not really ill. He just wants to hold your hand. Why don’t you take his thermometre? Here is the thermometer.
Anna took the thermometer and put it in Jack’s mouth. After 2 minutes she took it out and read it. Jack had a temperature over hundred and eight degrees Fahrenheit.
- That’s about 41 degrees Centigrade!
Jack quickly took the thermometer and read it himself.
- Help, I really am dying. Get a doctor at once.
The ward sister heard the noise and came in. She soon found out about Jack’s temperature. Jack didn’t have a temperature at all. Jim had put the thermometer in his tea.
The sister smiled : “Men are big babies. Never listen to them. Next time you’d better call another nurse”.
