Let me explain what propaganda is and how it was used during the world wars.

First, it is important to understand what propaganda is, why and how it was
used.
Propaganda consists in the spreading of ideas, information or rumour to either help or harm an institution, a cause, a country, a person or a group of person.

You can therefore understand why it was used so much by governments during world war I and then World war II.

Governments issued propaganda posters for many reasons :
 To recruit soldiers
 To help financing the war effort
 To rally people and unify the country behind the war effort
 To encourage people saving resources ( food, for example)
 To participate in home-front organisations.

A lot of posters were issued. They were very varied and different.
Indeed, depending on the goal, different techniques were used to try and persuade and convince people.

Some posters used :
 Demonization, name calling, half truth and lies or caricatures to mock the enemy

Others tools consisted in :
 Emotional or patriotic appeal to try and rally people to the cause.

Most propaganda posters used :
 catchy slogans, humour or evocative visual strategies to reach their goals.

These posters were always directed to what we call a « target audience ». It was either men or women or both depending on the message they tried to convey.
