Note to recorder:

If there are mistakes, please correct them. This recording is for 9th graders who study English as a second language so don't speak too fast if possible. Thanks a bunch!

I will present 9 famous women today:

- The first woman is Malala Yousafzai. Malala defied the Taliban in Pakistan and demanded that girls be allowed to receive an education. In 2014, she became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

- The second woman is Frida Kahlo. Frida smoked, boxed, won tequila challenges against men, and dressed like a man in a family portrait. She refused to change her ‘masculine’ features like her mono-brow and moustache, and actually exaggerated these features in the self portraits she created.

- The third woman is Carrie Fisher. She was an actress who played in the Star Wars saga and just like Leia – her character - she rebelled. She spoke up as a woman and denounced the way women were shown in movies - mostly for their bodies. She inspired lots of young actresses.

- The fourth woman is Marie Curie. In 1898, Marie Curie and her husband discovered a new radioactive element, which they named polonium, after Marie’s homeland. In 1903 the Curies were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics so Marie was the first woman awarded a Nobel Prize.

- The fifth woman is Ruth Bader Ginsberg. She is an American lawyer and Justice of the U.S Supreme Court. Ginsburg spent a considerable part of her career as an advocate for the advancement of gender equality and women's rights. Her opinions dissent from lots of people’s opinions.

- The sixth woman is Rosa Parks. She was African American. She became famous in 1955 when she refused to leave her seat to a white man, in the bus. She was arrested for this but furthered the rights of the African Americans in the U.S

- The seventh woman is Amelia Earhart. She was an American aviation pioneer. She was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences.

- The eighth woman is Joy Harjo. She is a poet, musician, and author. She is also the first Native American Poet Laureate. Harjo is also a founding member of the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation.

- The ninth woman is Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist and political activist. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped and led 13 missions to rescue 70 enslaved people, including family and friends.
