French Superheroes: Forgotten Legends?
When people think of superheroes, they usually think of American icons like Superman, Spider-Man, or Batman. But did you know that France also created its own superheroes — even before the United States?
In the early 1900s, France had characters like Fantômas and The Nyctalope (1911), or Judex (1916). These heroes (or sometimes villains) wore costumes, had secret identities, and fought crime or evil forces. Judex was a masked man who punished corrupt bankers. The Nyctalope had super vision and a mechanical organ, making him one of the first cyborgs in fiction — even before Superman was created.
So why don’t we talk about French superheroes today?
One reason is that the tone was different. French heroes were often mysterious, dark, and complex. They were not always “good guys” like American superheroes. Fantômas, for example, was a criminal mastermind — more like the Joker than Batman. French audiences liked mystery and irony more than clear heroes and villains.
Another reason is cultural. In the U.S., superheroes became part of national pride, especially during World War II and the Cold War. They represented American values like freedom, justice, and courage. In France, there was more doubt about heroism and power. The French often prefer anti-heroes, satire, or realistic stories. They like to question authority, not celebrate it.
For example, in the 1970s, French artists created Superdupont, a parody of patriotic superheroes. He wore a beret, used baguettes as weapons, and defended France against the mysterious enemy called “Anti-France.” It was funny — but it showed that French culture doesn’t always take superheroes seriously.
Today, France produces many comic books (called bandes dessinées) like Astérix, Valérian, or Adèle Blanc-Sec, but they are usually more humorous, fantastical, or historical, and don't have super powers. While Marvel and DC create huge universes and blockbuster films, French heroes rarely become international icons.
Still, the idea of the superhero is not dead in France. Maybe one day they'll make their big come back !
