THE EPIC POEM: BEOWULF

The old English literature was written in Anglo-Saxon. The most important works from this period are the epic poem "Beowulf", the Anglo-Saxon "Chronicle" and the poem "Caedmon's Hymn".

THE FIGURE OF THE POET
Old English poetry was anonymous and oral. The poet who was called stop. The poets sang from memory chronicles, history, myths and legends. In the 11th century the church clerks and monks fixed them in written form.

OLD ENGLISH
The first inhabitants of Britain were the Celts, they spoke a Celtic language and they left no literary texts. During the Romans invasions probably Latin was used by Roman soldiers and Britons who came into contact with them. The Normans introduce the French Language. The Anglo-Saxon and French language form the basis of modern English.

BEOWULF: IS AN EPIC POEM
The word "Epic" comes from the Greek noun "epos" which means "The Poet's oral exposition". The two major epic poems in the western tradition are: "The Iliad" and the "Odyssey" attributed to Greek poet Homer. After famous epic poems are "Aeneid" of Virgil and the Anglo-Saxon "Beowulf".

PLOT
The story is set in Denmark. The king of Denmark is king Hrothegar. The Monster Grendel frightens the Danes every night, killing them. Grendel's menace continues for 12 years, till Beowulf, a young warrior at the court of Hygelac, the king of Geats, decide to sail to Denmark with a small company of men, determined to defeat Grendel. Beowulf fight with the monster and mortally injures him. Grendel escapes to marshes and dies soon after. Grendel's mother, who lives in a lake, seeks revenge for her son. Beowulf travels to the lake, where he dives into the water and kills Grendel's mother with a sword forged for a giant. Beowulf becomes a hero. Later sails back to Geatland and there he rules for 50 years, bringing prosperity to his country. When Beowulf was an old man, a fire dragon menaces the Geats killing them. Beowulf decides to fight the fire dragon. He kills the monster but he is killed during the battle. His warriors burn his body on a huge funeral pyre and then bury him in a barrow overlooking the sea.

Beowulf, written in old English, is the oldest epic poem in the English language. It is about a Scandinavian hero and his adventures. Both the hero and the story are fiction. It describes a Germanic's warrior society, in which the relationship between the leader and his nobles is based on service.
