国家発祥の地としてロシア史に刻まれている。商業・貿易の繁栄により都市文化が発展し、独自の政体を築いた。現在は観光地となり、神秘的な中世の教会建築を目にしようと多くの観光客が訪れる。
国連教育科学文化機関（ユネスコ）の世界遺産に指定。
